[Busan Eats] The Ultimate Retro Local Vibe: Baekhwa Yanggopchang

Welcome back to Kovolution!

Today, I am posting about the absolute boss of Busan trips! The holy grail of gopchang (beef tripe) located just behind Jagalchi Market: #BaekhwaYanggopchang.

This place goes way beyond just being a good restaurant; the history and breath of Busan are fully alive right here. The moment you step in, it is completely packed with that authentic retro, local vibe of the old days, making you sweat and tear up! This is a 100% genuine, self-funded review! Hahaha.

Let's dive into the review.

๐Ÿ•ฐ The Story Behind Baekhwa Yanggopchang

Before we get to the food, let me share a brief story about this restaurant. Hahaha.

'Baekhwa Yanggopchang' is not run by a single owner! Inside a massive, warehouse-like building, dozens of individual gopchang stalls are clustered closely together, each operating under a numbered sign.

This system formed a very long time ago when multiple merchants gathered near Jagalchi Market to start their businesses. It is the living history of the tough, post-war life at the Busan port. That is why the moment you enter this space, you feel this strange, energetic vibe as if time has completely stopped! Hahaha.

๐Ÿ“ How to Get There

  • Address: 6 Jagalchi-ro 23beon-gil, Jung-gu, Busan

It is located in an alley right near Jagalchi Market. If you get off at Nampo Station or Jagalchi Station and walk toward the market, you will spot the 'Baekhwa Yanggopchang' sign showing the traces of time!

Once you find the sign, slip into the narrow alleyway, and the entrance to the building will appear.

๐Ÿ›– Inside & The Retro Vibe

Open the doors and... wow... Hahaha.

You seriously need to be prepared to shed some tears and a runny nose! Hahaha. A massive wave of smoke, intense heat, and the loud, welcoming greetings from the ajummas (aunties) hits you like a tsunami!!!

Can you see this atmosphere? There is absolutely zero modern interior here! Hahaha. Old tiles, round briquette tables, and plastic bags hanging everywhere... This is the true definition of a retro vibe!!! It feels overwhelmingly like you have walked into an old tavern near the docks from decades ago. Hahaha. We grabbed a seat at one of the many stalls inside!

๐Ÿ”ฅ Food & Honest Review

Our gopchang finally made its appearance!

Here, the aunties take charge of each table and personally grill the gopchang right in front of you!!! We ordered a mix of the salted grill and the marinated grill. Hahaha.

Wow... honestly, the price is a bit high. ใ… ใ…  Hahaha. But the auntie's grilling skills are
absolutely no joke! The tripe bursts w

ith rich juices as it cooks over the scorching hot briquettes.

I took one bite and... it literally melts in your mouth. ใ… ใ…  It has that magical, addictive taste that practically screams for a shot of Soju!!! Hahaha.

But... I proudly drank a Sprite! Hahaha!! It was a slight bummer not to have Soju with this incredible tripe, but pairing it with an ice-cold Sprite was still wonderfully fantastic! Hahaha. I even quickly polished off a bowl of rice mixed into the sauce! Hahaha.

Even though it is expensive, the portions were decent, making
it perfect for a filling meal. Hahaha.

๐Ÿ“ Final Verdict

The heavy smoke, smell, and rough atmosphere of the old building might be a slight downside for some... ใ… ใ…

However, the warm, expert cooking from the aunties and the deeply authentic retro vibe more than made up for it. I absolutely loved it! Hahaha.

If you are visiting Busan and want to properly experience the real local atmosphere, or if you just want to taste the happiness of a perfectly grilled piece of gopchang over a briquette fire, I highly recommend this place!

I will definitely be stopping by again on my next Busan trip to feel this vibe. My intention to revisit is 10,000%!!!
