Welcome back to Kovolution!

I am your local guide.

If you are planning a coastal getaway to Sokcho, you are in for a serious culinary treat. During my recent vacation to this beautiful seaside city, I discovered a true gem inside the famous Sokcho Jungang Market.

The restaurant is called Wonjo Donghae Sundaeguk, and while it is known as a soup restaurant, it hides one of the best local street foods you will ever taste: Abai Sundae.

Here is everything you need to know about this unique East Coast delicacy!

1. What is Abai Sundae & Squid Sundae?

If you haven't tried Korean Sundae (pronounced soon-dae), it is a traditional type of blood sausage packed with glass noodles, meat, and vegetables. However, Sokcho has its own special variations that are an absolute must-try:

  • Abai Sundae (아바이순대): Originating from North Korean refugees who settled in Sokcho, this version is incredibly rich, savory, and packed with a hearty filling.

  • Ojingeo Sundae (Squid Sundae / 오징어순대): Instead of a traditional sausage casing, a whole fresh squid is stuffed with a delicious mixture of minced tentacles, vegetables, and rice, then sliced and pan-fried to golden perfection.

2. The 'Wonjo Donghae Sundaeguk' Experience

We originally visited this restaurant specifically to try their Abai Sundae and Squid Sundae. The flavors were so deeply authentic and delicious that we actually ended up going back the very next day just to clear a bowl of their famous Gukbap (hot soup with rice)!

Gukbap is the ultimate Korean comfort food—a boiling hot, milky pork bone broth filled with tender meat. Paired with a side of crispy, pan-fried Squid Sundae, it is the perfect meal to recharge after exploring the bustling market.

3. How to Get There (Public Transit Guide)

The restaurant is located right in the heart of Sokcho's food scene.

  • Address: 35-17, Jungang-ro 129beon-gil, Sokcho-si, Gangwon State.

  • By Bus: If you arrive at the Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal, simply hop on local bus No. 1, 1-1, 7, or 9 from the terminal and get off at the "Sokcho Tourist & Fishery Market" (Jungang Market) stop. It only takes about 10 minutes!

  • Walking: The market is a massive landmark in the center of the city. Once you enter the market, ask any vendor for "Sundaeguk Alley" (순대국 골목), and you will find Wonjo Donghae Sundaeguk right among the bustling stalls.

📌 Editor's Note for Sokcho Travelers
If you are planning a coastal trip to Sokcho in Gangwon Province, exploring the famous Sokcho Jungang Market is a must. Don't miss out on trying authentic Abai Sundae (Korean blood sausage) and crispy, pan-fried Squid Sundae (Ojingeo Sundae) at Wonjo Donghae Sundaeguk. It is the ultimate comfort food experience, especially when paired with a boiling hot bowl of hearty pork broth Gukbap!
