Welcome to Kovolution!
If you are exploring the western side of Jeju Island, chances are you’ve fallen in love with the emerald waters of Hyeopjae Beach. But once the sun starts to set and the sea breeze works up an appetite, there is one local delicacy you simply cannot miss: Jeju Silver Hairtail (Galchi).
Today, I’m sharing my experience at Jegal-yang (μ κ°μ), a spot that redefined my understanding of what "fresh fish" really means.
π Perfect Location Near Hyeopjae
- Address: 155 Hallim-ro, Hallim-eup, Jeju-si(Google map).
- Proximity: It is located just a few minutes from Hyeopjae and Geumneung beaches, making it an ideal dinner spot after a day of coastal wandering.
- The Vibe: The restaurant is spacious, clean, and has massive windows that let in the soft Jeju light. It’s professional yet welcoming—perfect for families or groups.
π What Makes Jeju Hairtail So Special?
Before we get into the food, let’s talk about why people travel across the world to eat this specific fish in Jeju.
Hairtail caught in the waters around Jeju is famous for its shimmering, untarnished silver skin. This is because Jeju fishermen traditionally use the "long-line" (hook and line) method rather than massive nets. Net-caught fish often lose their scales and get bruised, but line-caught hairtail is pulled up individually, preserving its quality and buttery texture.
π½️ The Main Event: Grilled vs. Braised
We decided to try both of the heavy hitters on the menu: Grilled Hairtail (Galchi-gui) and Braised Hairtail (Galchi-jorim).
1. The Grilled Hairtail (The "Real" Experience)
This was my first time ever having high-end grilled hairtail, and honestly, the size was intimidating! Large hairtail is a completely different beast from the thin versions you find in regular supermarkets.
- Taste: The meat is thick, incredibly moist, and has a natural sweetness that doesn't need much seasoning.
- The Kovolution Tip: While both were delicious, if you want the "true" taste of Jeju's ocean, go for the grilled version. It allows the quality of the fish to shine without being masked by spice.
2. The Braised Hairtail (The Flavor Bomb)
Served in a large shallow pot, the hairtail is simmered in a spicy, savory red sauce with thick slices of radish and potatoes.
- The Result: The sauce seeps into the fish, and when you mix that spicy broth with a spoonful of warm white rice, it’s absolute heaven.
πͺ A Surprising Sign of Authenticity
Here is a "pro-traveler" moment for you: while eating, we actually found a small fishing hook still embedded in the fish!
In most places, this might be a complaint, but in Jeju, it’s actually a mark of pride. It proves that the fish was truly line-caught by a local fisherman and not swept up in a commercial net. It’s the ultimate certificate of authenticity. (Just be careful when you’re digging in!)
π± The Generous Side Dishes
Jegal-yang doesn't just stop at the main dish. The table was filled with incredible side dishes including:
- Mackerel Sashimi & Grilled Mackerel: You get to taste two types of fish for the price of one!
- Pork Cutlet (Tonkatsu): A surprising but welcome side that’s great if you’re traveling with kids.
- Japchae & Fresh Salads: Standard but high-quality Korean staples that balance the meal.
π Final Verdict
Jegal-yang isn't just a restaurant; it’s a showcase of Jeju’s maritime culture. Seeing a giant, silver fish laid out across your table is a visual spectacle, but the melt-in-your-mouth texture is what will stay with you long after the trip.
If you are in the Hyeopjae area and want a meal that feels like a true "event," this is the place to go.
